Lights at the Zoo

Nathan and I visited Lights at the Zoo in Toledo last night. This same exact photo was taken nine years ago...WOW! Nathan and I have gone together to Lights at the Zoo since the first year we started dating in high school. Last night we enjoyed our visit after meeting Nathan's sister Marissa for dinner at El Vaquero...the best mexican restaurant ever! Nathan and I headed to the zoo afterward and walked around for over an hour enjoying the beautiful lights and fabulous Christmas music (my personal favorite!). It's amazing how the Lights at the Zoo always excites us for Christmas! As we were leaving last night we walked past a young couple and we both looked back when we saw that the young man was wearing a Perrysburg High School lettermans jacket. The same high school we went to...That was us nine years ago! We had a good chuckle over that one! I am so thankful to still be holding Nathan's hand as I walk through the Toledo Zoo...

Christmas Cheer

The Holiday Reindeer

Izzy and I wrapping presents

On Wednesday I volunteered along with several other Ross Partners to create a holiday store. The store was on the third floor of the Mott Cancer Center and was created for one day only. The shoppers? They were the children that spend time at the Mott Center for cancer treatment. Here are a few snapshots of my day helping the children shop. It was so rewarding to help these children pick out and wrap gifts for the special people in their lives. They were all so excited!

Grandpa

My grandfather passed away this morning. He left peacefully as he was surrounded by my Grandmother and his children. He was diagnosed with COPD when I was in high school. Although he has been sick for quite some time, I was still absolutely shocked when my dad called this morning to tell me the awful news.

Over the past few months I have posted a few things about my grandparents but today I wanted to post something special just for my grandpa. I had started a letter for him that I planned to send so that he could read it before Christmas. These are a few of the memories that I wanted to share with him in that letter.

I love your homemade granola. I always looked forward to having a bowl in the morning; soaking it in ice cold milk and drenching it with Grandma's sweet strawberries. I've tried to make it before, it tasted awful in the end! You obviously have a special touch in making it perfectly sweet with that teensy hint of salt.

Everytime I came for the summer we'd make a strawberry pie. I don't know if it was your recipe or Grandma's, but you and I would make it together and so I've always thought of it as your strawberry pie recipe. I can remember almost burning the sugar mixture a hundred times, but you always seemed to catch me doing it in time. It was so hard waiting to eat that first slice because I knew what it was going to taste like...delicious! I made one this summer for Nathan...I burnt the first batch of sugar and had to start over! I sent you the pictures of it and as you saw it wasn't a very pretty looking pie, but it tasted good!

Everytime we'd go to Green Bay you'd try to take me to Chili John's with the boys. Everytime.

I spent more time playing downstairs with the kitchen that you made for me than any other toy I had. I could play house for hours in the basement cooking on my stove or putting the groceries away in the refrigerator. I can see the little silver handles on the white wood doors. I was always so excited to play house in the kitchen that you built for me.

Remember when I'd come to visit from Cincinnati? I'd fly Comair so we'd drive to the airport in Appleton. We usually made a road trip out of it by getting lunch before the flight. I think we even went out to lunch when I'd fly out of Green Bay.

I loved to play in the little house outside the old house. Remember when Andy was trying to take my bottle of Ting? He was laying on the roof of the little house trying to reach through the window to get my Ting while Gret and I were playing inside. He fell, knocked the wind out of himself and lost his lunch in the grass...the little sneak!

I used to love when you and Grandma would come to babysit us in Cincinnati. Do you remember when you met our neighbors and my best friend Kieran's grandpa, Dadu? We still talk about that first meeting. Do you remember when I helped the neighbor Dave paint the baby room and I didn't tell you or Grandma where I was going...I went missing for quite awhile that day, oops!

I loved our family slideshows. We'd all sit in the basement and watch at least one full reel of the photos that you'd taken of us all over the years. Sometimes we even got to help you put them together. I never did get the hang of putting the slide in upside down, or was it supposed to be backwards? I still can't remember!

I loved the photo sessions that you'd have us do. Your pictures always turned out so realistic and simple, yet absolutely beautiful. You captured us in our everyday lives. Do you remember when you first got Patsy and you took a whole roll of film with me holding her outside the house on Beechnut Court? We must have been taking pictures for an hour outside! Do you remember the pictures you took of Em and Gret and I in our matching denim and straw hats? I thought we were so cool and totally models! I still love those pictures.

I don't think I've ever met another Grandpa that has hair like you do. A full head of that perfect silvery-white hair.

You read faster than anyone I've ever met. You always sat in the same chair by the fireplace in our family room in Cincinnati and you would just read and read. You can finish a huge book in no time at all!

You always drive the speed limit. Late or early, it doesn't matter, you never speed.

Whenever I was driving home I would always call you and Grandma along the way or once I got there. You always reminded me to stop every two hours and take a break. That's after you'd tell me to drive carefully and not to speed.

I still have my wooden basket. That was so much fun to make! I remember being so excited to take mine home and put it in my room. It's blue with pink sponge painted on it.

Do you remember when I drove over from Luther late one night? I got a phone call from you when I was in Appleton and you let me have it! Something similar to "Where the heck are you?" which caused me to cry. When I got to the house you gave me a hug and told me how worried you were because you hadn't heard and you thought I was going to be there for dinner. We were both so shaken up...until Grandma brought out the yummy cake she'd cut up for us to eat. Amazing how the sweet treat calmed us right down! :)

Whenever I call the house you answer the same way. "Well, Hello Elizabeth!" No one says it the way that you do.

I will never forget our last brunch together this summer. I am so thankful that you were able to meet Nathan again. I'd never heard about your first job before but I am so glad that I got to hear about it from you. Grandpa Roy really knew how to help people get interesting jobs! Ha! Like you said, hopefully Nathan won't have to herd cattle the day after we get married. And hopefully our first breakfast as a married couple won't consist of just bacon! I know I will be thinking about you on our wedding day, wishing you were there.

Love you lots Grandpa.

One Third Down, Two Thirds to Go

Two Months Old!

Four Months Old!

Well Sampson went to the vet for his four month shots yesterday. He weighed in at 53.1 pounds! WOW! That means he was just a few pounds away from doubling in size since last month! WOW! He's completely healthy...just a big puppy! He is officially 1/3 of his expected size of 150 pounds!

Finally, The Search Ends at Home

For the past two weeks I have been searching for a Christmas wreath for the front door. I have looked for both fake and fresh and haven't found a single one that I liked. Well, I decided to stop on my way back from Columbus (we flew through there) at a home store called Kirkland's. I walked out of there with a mirror, star sconces, small lamp and a hanging Christmas sign. No wreath. Well, I got home, walked in the door and this is what I saw!

Is my Aunt Mary the best or what? I was so excited to have received the perfect wreath that I had to hang it on the door right away! It looks beautiful and smells fabulous! Thank you to the Steinberg's for sending us a Pacific Northwestern Christmas Wreath!

The Biggest Blue Fan of All!

I swear this was not prompted at all!

Frankie was trying to get up on a "big girl chair" and I said "I will help you, but you have to say the magic word." I was asking for "please" obviously but "GO BLUE!" is what she said! Now, if you remember almost two months ago Nathan and I taught her to say "Go Blue!" and she was so good at it! Well, her Aunt Rissa just about died along with her poor Buckeye-loving mother Libby. I died laughing because this is what happened next! Here is her Aunt Rissa trying to talk her into joining the dark side...

What a smart little girl...Go Blue!

Aunt Barbara's Margaritas

Yes, I wore my new Christmas pajama's ALL day long and I'm proud of it!

I didn't get the grey memo...

After a LONG day of cookie baking I decided to throw in a fun family recipe from my family with a pitcher of my Aunt Barbara's Margaritas! The four of us celebrated a long but sweet day by raising a glass. (Libby spent most of her day entertaining the girls...she did squeek in a couple batches this morning though..but sadly for her, no margaritas.) They were so refreshing and went well with our dinner of Mexican Manicotti and Nathan's Mom's Famous Cheese Dip. Yum!

The margarita's are so easy to make and they taste fabulous!

Aunt Barbara's Margaritas
1 - 12 oz. can of frozen limeade concentrate
1 - 12 oz. can of Sprite (or just refill the limeade can)
1 - 12 oz. bottle of beer (or can)
6-12 oz. of tequila (I just pour it in the limeade can starting with half and adding more if it needs it! Sometimes less is more...sometimes!)

Mix all of the ingredients and pour over ice. Serve with sliced limes! So good!

Sisters

Apparently flour fights are quite common when you have a sister. Especially when you are making Christmas cookies with all of the other women in your family! I think poor Rissa lost this round...you look pretty cute with a flour face though!

Rolls and More

This summer when Nathan and I met his parents up at the cottage in Wisconsin we stopped to visit with his Grandmother in Wausau. While we were there she baked homemade dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls for us to take up north. Oh my goodness...they were delicious! I called Bev for the recipe last month and she gave it willingly but warned me that it might not work the first time I did it, but not to get discouraged if it did. I decided not to get discouraged at all, so I chickened out and didn't even try! So, this morning when I got up Phyllis, Nathan's grandma who drove over for cookie weekend, informed me that "we" were going to make rolls. I was so excited but secretly really scared! I have never made homemade bread of any kind! Phyllis was so patient with and I think even managed to have a good time passing on her tips for dinner roll, cinnamon roll, apple kucken and schtolen making. Yes, we were able to make all of these things from our bread dough! I have tried all but the schtolen so far and let me tell you, it's all amazing! My new goal is to try and make rolls from scratch atleast once a month...apparently they freeze nicely. Bev made the best pumpkin rolls with cranberry butter for Thanksgiving and I'd love to try them as well but I think I'll perfect my dinner rolls before I attempt those!

The action shot...kneading the dough. (thanks Rissa!)

A great tip from Nathan's mom...instead of trying to cut the cinnamon roll dough she showed me that unflavored dental floss looped around the dough and then pulled tight can slice right through it without smooshing it at all. Remember that if you're ever making homemade cinnamon like me...hee hee...I think she mentioned using it with cookie dough rolls as well!

Apple Kuken...so good we couldn't wait until the next morning to eat it!

Schtolen

Dinner Rolls...the thing that started it all!

Cinnamon Rolls...my personal favorite!

The Trip to Cookie Land

The "Zyduck Gals" have an annual cookie weekend where they bake all weekend long before Christmas. Now that Rick and Bev live in Prescott everyone has a bit of traveling to do. I drove to Perrysburg to meet Marissa, we then drove to Libby's in Lancaster (southeast of Columbus) to spend Thursday night before our early Friday morning flight. By the time Marissa, Libby and I stopped talking it was already 2:30 in the morning. We had to wake up at 3:30 for our flight! I decided not to go to bed at all...bad idea! We had a fairly easy trip considering the layover in O'Hare and having the two baby girls traveling with us! Frankie was a trooper on both flights...as you can see, she spent most of the time coloring on the white bags the airline provides, a.k.a. puke bags! Roo slept for the entire trip! I was lucky enough to get to hold her for a majority of the last flight! She is such a sweet little girl! We were all so excited to get to Minneapolis even though it was only 8:45 in the morning!

Frankie coloring on "special" bags with her Mommy on the way to see her Mimi and Papa!

This was my lucky view for a majority of the trip. Who minds not sleeping for 2 days when they get to hold a beautiful baby? She was such a good little traveler!
