Saturday at Somerset

Nathan headed off to the Michigan vs. Ohio State game early Saturday morning. Like 6 a.m. early...no thank you! Anyway, he and the boys were planning to stay in Columbus for the night. What fun for them!

So, me and the girls planned a trip to Somerset Mall for Saturday! Somerset is about an hour away and has just about every high end store you could imagine in a mall. I was especially excited to look for wedding shoes at Nordstroms!

I dropped Sampson off at Doggie Day Care for the day and then jumped in Sara's car for the trip to Somerset. I was in the front seat and trying my best not to navigate this trip. I have a tendency to help Sara with directions when I'm in the front seat...I think it comes from our first Detroit trip where I was in charge of reading the directions word for word in fear that we'd get lost in the ghetto. Yikes! Anyway, I noticed about fifteen minutes into the trip that not only were we going the long way but Sara had gone South on 275 instead of North. I calmly asked "Um, Sara, which way were you planning to go to Somerset?" to which she replied "I have a sussy for you!" Hmm...nice deflection..."So, Sara which way are you going?" and again she replies "Just open the sussy!" Inside of my sussy (quick definition: unexpected gift or present) I found Amy Sedaris' book on hosting. Inside the front cover I found mapquest directions to an address in Lakewood, Ohio. WHAT?? Lakewood?? Where the heck is Lakewood?? And then it clicked. We were going to Cleveland, Sara's old stomping grounds, to eat at her favorite restaurant, Melt. We'd been dying to do it since our visit to Perrysburg and now it was finally happening. I still can't figure out why I was the only one to be surprised. Maybe the girls just knew that I needed a little pick me up. Or maybe they just wanted me to panick when I realized Sara was going to the wrong way. Either way it was a nice surprise!

Here is one of the beautiful moments of our trip. A super fast van towing a pop up camper covered in freshly killed deer. I think Jenny had a minor breakdown in the backseat. She's not a big fan of hunters killing Bambi's mom.

It's MELT! We made it and after a small wait we were finally seated.

Melt's menu's are printed on the back of old records. Meghan really liked hers. Can you tell?

Mmm...spinach artichoke dip...

A quick shot of the gals before we dug into our delicious Melt meals.

Hiding Jenny's card from the restaurant goers. Mind you the Michigan vs. OSU was playing on every other tv inside the restaurant. Also know that I cheered out loud three times, after which the following things happened:

1. The host asked if we were Michigan fans. If so, our wait would be 1 hour instead of 30 minutes.

2. A scary looking man stared right at me like I'd announced I was a child abuser.

3. Meghan literally stared me down and said "I do NOT want people spitting in my food. STOP CHEERING!"

So, we hid Jenny's card.

We toured Cleveland and saw all of Sara's favorite places. We even saw a deer in the middle of a neighborhood entrance...don't worry, this one was alive. Sara took us to this house. Hard to see, but can you guess why it's special?

That's right! Ralphie lives here! Well, he did in A Christmas Story anyway. How funny to see it in person. It's now a museum. Very cool.

We convinced Sara to order dinner to go from her favorite Mexican restaurant, Nuevo Acapulco. If we weren't still STUFFED from lunch, we all might have eaten there. Instead, Sara got her favorite meal and we jumped back on the highway towards Ann Arbor.

Thanks for the fun Saturday girls...no more surprises!
